A Season In Hell #13: Theme From A Season In Hell

Sometimes I get nostalgic. I moved a lot in my life, an average of once every two years. I went to ten schools in thirteen years (K-12), and the one thing that was a constant was music. Music and TV. The two things that were constant were music and TV. And family. The three…three things that were constant were music, TV, family and the ever increasing amount of sarcasm that made it into my humor.

I made it down for the weekly KFJC (http://kfjc.org) staff meeting this past week, for the first time in about seven years. I’m hoping to do a show a month there. I’ll keep you posted.

With that I bring you this latest episode. If you’re a fan of nighttime police dramas, then you’ll enjoy this show.

A Season In Hell #12: Waiting for the Man

***Warning*** Because of the need for server space, I will be removing Episode #1 and possibly #2 by Thursday, August 2nd, 2007. You have been warned.

I spent a year in DC last week. I was there for an education conference, and I had the luxury of seeing the New York Dolls perform at the legendary 9:30 Club. The club has been open since the 70’s, but obviously in a very different location. What a great club; amazing sound and stage. The Dolls were incredible too. Only Sylvain and Johanson are alive from the original lineup, but the rest of the band seriously kicked ass. They have a new CD out, go get it.

I got to walk “The Mall”, which is the federal gov’t area. Quite impressive, even if you don’t like the schmuck who lives in the white house right now.

This week I include some early NY Dolls. I also have some live tracks from Tom Waits with the Kronos Quartet doing the theme to my favorite show: “The Wire”. If you haven’t seen this great police drama on HBO, you’re missing the best written show on TV. Some live Lou Reed shows up near the end of the podcast today. A real rarity is included in the guise of Neil Young. He never released “Chrome Dreams”, but all of the music made it on to something eventually. This version of “Powderfinger” never did.

Cyclecide & the folks at Mousetrap have kindly asked us to join 'em in a pickin frenzy the weekend of July 23. at a big event they are holding in SF at the old market across from Cell Space. Gives us a reason to make a couple of repairs.....mmmmm repairs.

I'm afraid no pickin on the playa this year. we are lazy and self-absorbed. If we go out, it will be under the very noble flag of the NEVERWAS project. Between them and The Kenetic Steamworks project, Steam Village ought to be a fun place this year!....In my humble opinion, of course.

Richard Tuck is this guy who is trying to re-create an amusement park in El Cerrito.

Here's a quote from the website: " When Richard Tuck and Tim Sauer purchased the old Angelo's Market on San Pablo Avenue in El Cerrito to turn it into office space in 1998, they planned to permanently save the rear portion of the building for "fun projects" totally unrelated to their business. In 1999 the Marcks Family Miniature Circus found a new home back in this area of the building known at the time as "Richard's Fun House." Over the years Richard had collected memorabilia from San Francisco's venerable Playland-at-the-Beach and from other defunct amusement parks around the nation. The bitter and the sweet....

I want to thank every last one of you for support. I have to say that the making of and showing off of the spectacle meant a whole lot to me.

I got to meet and be awed by some very wonderful people. (Especially the annonymous CTP) I got to have a wierd email relationship with a very cool Brit. In every way I am greatful.

I am a bit confused about what to do now. You see, I came back to some pretty weird stuff that negativly compaired Burning Man and it's excesses to the New Orleans Tragedy. Anybody who knows me and my politics knows I am not the type to fiddle while Rome burns. This is a heck of a time to want to be proud of a nose-picking machine. I just hid in bed for 24 hours. I have not written Tim Hunkin. I am frankly stymied.

I want to talk about this. I want to be proud and ask for pictures. I want to meet Tim and do all of the stuff that was buzzing in my head before I found out about the flood. But, I don't know how. Or when. Frankly, I need some insight! Got any?

Disgusting Spectacle! Someone in Detroit has copied it once before -
but he didn't try to enlarge it!
I have friends who have repeatedly tried to persuade me to go to Burning
man, and the photos I've seen look great - but I hate the heat. I go to
Iceland for my holidays.

And the work goes on...

We got the hamster wheel up and moving and it is a lot of fun. However, when misused, it is also dangerous! It simply works too well! It seems that car rotors can gain quite a momentum. If you run on it full tilt, it doesn't take much to get swept up 8 feet in the air. After that comes the discovery that gravity is not your friend. Luckily, the 15 year old girl who taught us this lesson didn't break or sprain anything. (She jumped up and down laughing about how "cool" the experience was while I was shaking/crying/hyperventilating & wiping blood off her waffle marked shoulder)

Even though the wheel would be slowed when attached to the machine, We have added plenty od safety measures. We were going to put in handrails anyway, but now there will also be a harness in the center, a non-slip rubberized paint on the mesh and we're going to switch out the bolts for something a bit safer.

As Mr. nosepicker grows, he develops a dual personality. The art is friendly Jeckyll and the engineering is definitely Hyde. The joke has been that if we can't get it to actually work, we'll just put up a screen and have someone push the arm up and down while people run. We'll just say it's a political statement.

The truth is...I'm sorry to say, the motion doesn't translate. We can get the arm up easily enough, however it catches on the back swing. when the wheel is at "10 o clock" the force is too great and the whole thing freezes.

We are, unfortunately, going to have to try a different way. A very nice engineer named CTP, who said he met you when you were at the Exploritorium, told us to use a lever/pivot then add the twist motion in separately. It is a nice solution.

Is it ok to say I'm disappointed? I like the way your machine works. I have always been intimidated by mechanics and I'm exactly the type of person you write your beginners books for. So, you might say that seeing a simple metal bar with a twist on each end holds a special fascination for me. It's something even I can understand.

The plan

As you approach our part of the midway (which will be next to the Moustrap if there is any justice in this world)
you will be properly insulted by one of our very professional carnival greeters. (Krista, David and Tony)

These excellent greetings will be tailor made for each and every participant (who we shall now refer to as Mark)
as "Mark" is brought into our sphere he/she shall be encouraged to "participate" in our "interactive art instilation." Mark will then recieve a "ticket" and ordered to get on a "wheel."

The wheel shall be painted as a coin and as Mark runs toward the slot, the money makes the art move...and the art...well, you can figure out the rest.
If Mark behaves him/her self and does a good job, they can get a prize. A slightly used "we're #1 foam hand that has "I *pick* my art" senciled on one side and "Disgusting Specticle '05" on the other. the ticket also allows them to see the impressive Apocalypse & Son oddity museum housed in the 24'truck.

Thanks to Krista, Giles, and Jerico Reese we are well under way. Bless them, their pets and everybody who looks like them or their pets!
