Oh, and here's a link to Playland Not At The Beach, which might be a worthy home for the Disgusting Spectacle later.
www.playland-not-at-the-beach.org/
Richard Tuck is this guy who is trying to re-create an amusement park in El Cerrito.
Here's a quote from the website: " When Richard Tuck and Tim Sauer purchased the old Angelo's Market on San Pablo Avenue in El Cerrito to turn it into office space in 1998, they planned to permanently save the rear portion of the building for "fun projects" totally unrelated to their business. In 1999 the Marcks Family Miniature Circus found a new home back in this area of the building known at the time as "Richard's Fun House." Over the years Richard had collected memorabilia from San Francisco's venerable Playland-at-the-Beach and from other defunct amusement parks around the nation. The "Fun House" became the perfect repository for setting up exhibits for friends to visit and admire the collection."

Fri, July 22, 2005 - 2:14 AMAn amusement oark in El Cerrito...that is so fucking insane. ec is a bedroom community with a shady past and new mall. The park will give it an even further edge. I wonder if the owner would mind the liability of the hamster wheel. -

Re: Playland Not At The Beach
Fri, July 22, 2005 - 4:33 AMI met today with Richard Tuck, the founder of the thing. A long time ago I used to go to his "Garage Roxie", a movie theatre he built in his garage. He has a penchant for doing the unusual. His house is a showplace of mazes, hidden passages, etc. The house is called "It Must Be Magic" and includes so many rooms of artifaces and weird stuff that he gives scheduled tours of the house.
Oh, and Richard Tuck also owns a circus. Circus Chimera. They're touring the Northwest now and will be in the Bay Area later this year.
www.circuschimera.com/
Anyhow, he took me on a tour of the stuff he and his volunteers are putting together for Playland Not At The Beach. They have ancient arcade games, a Laughing Sal, a ski bowl machines, and even a bumper car. All are authentic and are being refurbished. They either came from SF's old Playland at the Beach or from other amusement parks and arcades.
They also plan to have a seance room and some kind of haunted house I think.
Here's a link to a journal some people wrote about him:
www.roundamerica.com/trip/jo...ay75.htm
And here's a link to the Playland site:
www.playland-not-at-the-beach.org/
As for a home for The Disgusting Spectacle, he told me that he simply does not have the room at this time. I'm thinking though that the parking lot might be a good place, but I didn't think about it until after I left.
He's seen this tribe and the photos and enjoyed it a lot.
Saturday at 1pm they're having a volunteer work day/party starting at 1:0pm. The location is about 5 blocks south of the El Cerrito Del Norte BART station on San Pablo and Jefferson.
I'm not sure I'm supposed to tell the address, so I'll point people to the website and suggest anybody interested to phone first and talk with the volunteer coordinator to find out about a tour, the volunteer days, etc.

Re: Playland Not At The Beach
Fri, September 23, 2005 - 12:07 PMHere's something going on tomorrow at Playland Not At The Beach: A work day in prep for a Halloween TV show, followed by a free night at the Circus Chimera tomorrow night.
Circus Chimera is a traveling Cirque du Soleil type of circus owned by Richard Tuck, the guy who started Playland Not At The Beach in El Cerrito.
---------------------
Thanks to Tom Wyrsch, Playland-Not-at-the-Beach is going to get a huge dose of free publicity. On Halloween night a TV show is going to be broadcast to 138 cities around the country. The host is Horror Show personality Mr. Lobo, and the guests will include the Banana Splitz of Saturday morning kids' show fame. The show itself is being taped this Sunday at Playland-Not-at-the-Beach, so we have our work cut out for us getting everything cleaned up and ready. Any helpers who can spare some time tomorrow (Saturday, September 24th) will be most welcome. We will be working from 9:30 am to 5:00 pm. No special skills required!
And tomorrow night we are taking all volunteers to see Circus Chimera in Hayward as our guests. So bring along some friends to help during the day at Playland, and spend the evening for free at the circus!
***
It has been a very busy week with people helping on projects. The exterior of The Dickens Parlour is almost done and is looking fabulous. Eric has done a great job of painting all the tiny details on the bric-a-brac, gingerbread facade.
The exterior of Dark Mystery is looking much better, thanks to Charlie who has taken this area on as his pet project. And the new neon sign for the Big Dipper rollercoaster track is now in place, thanks to Anthony. Our night crew does an amazing job working from 5:00 into the wee hours. I delight in beginning each day by taking a stroll trhough Playland to see what got done each night while I was away. Anthony also mounted the totally refurbished Parker Carousel rounding board, complete with bright, colorful lightbulbs in each one of the hand carved wooden flowers. It looks great!
***
The Carousel Carnival area is starting to also look wonderful. We will be doing a lot of cleaning in this area tomorrow so that all the games will be working for the TV cameras. I need to now make arrangements to drive to Los Angeles to pick up the 12 foot "Penny Arcade" sign that we purchased. It was originally on Main Street at Disneyland for decades and has 100 light bulbs in it. We are talking huge! What better new home for it than Playland-Not-at-the-Beach.
***
Here is an update on our October 15th event. Originally we had planned a major undertaking with an outdoor carnival and indoor sneak peek. Unfortunately we have not been able to attract enough consistent volunteers to get things ready for an event of that size, so we are postponing the outdoor carnival until the Spring. In the meantime though, we are going ahead with an Open House on October 15th to allow the community to come and take a peek at what we are doing here at Playland. Now we have our work cut out for us readying for the Open House.
Our fundraising campaign has been bringing us a wonderful number of people who are committed to helping Playland open next spring. The plan was that everyone who becomes a Friend of Playland would get free admission to the special Carnival and Sneak Preview on October 15th. Since we are now having two events, one on October 15th and one in the Spring, "Friends" will get free admission to both! Thank you for your support. See the Playland website for more information.
Best regards,
Richard Tuck

Through the magic of animatronics, Dick Tuck is alive and well and living in El Cerrito. After all, it's supposed to be an amusement park museum, right?
No, not right. Richard Tuck is not Dick Tuck. I knew Richard Tuck quite a few years back, and he's been living in El Cerrito all this time. His home is a showplace, incidentally, and he gives tours of the place.
All I remember about his home was that he once operated the Garage Roxie, a theatre in his garage.
